How to Buy Outdoor Wall Sconces

If you have decided to put wall sconces in the garage, balcony, or patio of your house, consider all the options you have so as to get the best one sold in the market. You have to mull over several things when purchasing outdoor wall sconces. The main thing you should be concerned about is the way the wall sconce would fair as far as durability, functionality, and design are concerned.

The first thing you should consider when buying outdoor wall sconces would be the look or theme of your home. Homes following the pre-Victorian look are better off with sconces made of wrought iron. On the other hand, houses with a touch of Mediterranean influence can use brass sconces. Those that sport a modern look can go for the glass types, although these ones aren't much advisable for outdoor use.

In which case, metals are still your best options. They can withstand all weather, even heat and the elements. Metals are strong materials and that's the reason why they are used for anything used outdoors. Glasses are not as strong. Opt for the sconces that can sustain traffic, rains, and storms.

Glass can still be used outdoors too. But, you have to go for the type that has a strong support system. This is where metals come in. Go for sconces that combine both glass and metal to achieve the look you desire and the durability that is also as important.

As far as designs and artistic styles are concerned, you've got lots of options. You can check the available designs from the internet. There are also some that are sold at the local stores. The option to have the sconces customized is also available. Visit a metal works expert and ask him if he can make you a set of metal sconces for use outdoors. If you want glass to be added to the piece, you have to talk to an independent glass manufacturer too. While this is the more expensive route, you're sure to get the exact look and style you want anyway.

If you choose to buy the pre-made ones over the customized outdoor wall sconces, always see to it that you inspect closely the materials used, the product design, and its over all functionality. When you do this, then you will be ensured of the best buy in the market. Also, it pays to get the sconces from a dealer that you trust. This way, you'll not only get the ideal products - you'll get them at the right price too.

Decorating Your Home With Wrought Iron Sconces

Wrought iron sconces can be used as either a main focal point in a room, or an additional light to create a special atmosphere. One thing you need to consider is how these wall sconces fit into the general decor of your home. Thankfully, sconces come in many different styles and designs that suite every taste.

Sconces can be very artistic; swirls and bends which makes a delicate touch to your home. They can also come in straight, no-nonsense minimalistic designs that mix the old and new so well. There are also many difference sizes available. The small 1-arm wall sconces add a delicate lighting addition to a room and the bigger sconces can be used as a main source of light.

Wall sconces use two different methods of lighting. The candelabra bulbs us electricity and the more traditional candles. There are pros and cons of using both of these lighting options; but they are both capable of creating an ambient light that is difficult to reproduce with other forms of lighting.

Wrought Iron sconces can also be used in almost every room in the house including the outside and the hallways. There are also able to blend in with many interior designs. Having a modern decorated house with neutral colors works with wrought iron sconces just as well as when the room is decorated Victorian style. You can choose the wall sconce to fit in with your style of decor rather than choosing the decor to fit in with the lighting fixtures. Sconces are a versatile light fitting.

Tuscan Interior Design - Now That's Italian!

Besides pasta, when you think of Italy, what do you think of? Most people would say that they envision the rolling hills of Tuscany. It is true; you cannot find a more beautiful scene than picturesque Tuscany, especially during autumn when the fall harvest is in full effect and the colors are breathtaking with their deep reds, golden yellows and crisp greens. Many people take these ideas into their homes to create the same warm tones. Tuscan interior design is all about colors and textiles. Deep, rich colors of autumn and layers of different fabrics helps to create a warm and inviting room in any home.

When you are shopping for furniture pieces for your Tuscan inspired room, stick with a neutral color palette and work up from there intertwining different throw pillows and draperies in rich fabrics to bring in the warmth. A caramel colored couch in tweed or a velvet fabric will give off lusciousness without appearing too stuffy. Pair the couch with a comfortable brown leather chair. Adding throw pillows with coordinating trim in rich colors such as cranberry, moss and gold will warm up your room greatly. Adding a throw rug in these rich colors will tie everything into place. When you are ready to shop for accessories, you can really have fun with these ones! If you have room above the mantle, shop around for a beautiful Tuscan countryside print. The colors of the fall harvest in the print will really tie in all of the colors that you have used around your room to create great warmth. Many homes in Tuscany will decorate their house with wrought iron artwork. You can find these pieces inexpensively many places. Hang an ornate piece on the wall, or use it as a candle holder with off white candles to create a warm and romantic ambiance.

Tuscan interior design will warm up any stark room. Creating a room like this all has to do choosing the right colors and not being afraid of the colors you are using. Fill your room up with these autumnal colors. Give your wall a beautiful treatment by painting it a golden yellow and dry brushing on cranberry and brown before rubbing it in with a rag. This will give off an antique-like feel and will be quite a conversation piece.

Decorating With Metallic Colors

As most people know, chrome is most seen in the kitchen and in the bathroom.  You will more than likely see chrome in the fixtures in the bathroom or the sink itself will be chrome.  If you don't like the dull look of chrome in your bathroom, try adding a black wooden mirror frame that will compliment the chrome.

If the kitchen is more your favorite place for chrome, then a nice chrome stove will give your kitchen a whole new look.  Many people are afraid to put a nice chrome stove in their kitchen thinking that their kitchen will look too industrial.  But you can add special touches like a wooden shelf above the stove and hang some copper pots from the ceiling.  Another great idea to offset the chrome is to use fabrics such as curtains in the window and tablecloths on the kitchen table.  If you are one of the ones who believe that chrome is harsh, then offset it by using materials that are soft such as sheepskin on your chairs.  Now to add color to the kitchen, a blue table cloth or blue curtains would be the perfect choice.  Chrome looks best when paired with deep colors such as maroon, dark blue or forest green.

The metallic color of silver can spruce up any home.  Now you may be thinking that you can't match silver with anything and your home with look like a decorated Christmas tree.  Or you may think that silver will make your home look like a hospital.  But this simply isn't the case.  For a spectacular looking dining room, a black iron dining table with black iron chairs and a glass tabletop pair well with silver upholstered chairs.

Let's take a look now at some specific decorating tips for you to use if you are interested in using metallic color accents in your color design.

Candle holders- Imagine the beautiful glow of a candle held in a metallic colored candle holder.  For colors such as blue or green, choose a holder that is silver or chrome.  On the other hand, you will want to use gold or bronze holders for colors such as orange or red.

Appliances- For a great look in your kitchen, try using all steel appliances such as stove, refrigerator and toaster.

Furniture- There is nothing that makes you living room or front porch look more stunning than wrought black iron coffee table or sliver side tables with glass tops.

Gifts For Animal People

If you are like me you often find yourself wracking your brain to hit on that special gift for that special person. If nothing quickly comes to mind I start thinking about their particular likes. If they have animal pets then the chore can become quite simple, in that, you can start thinking about their pets and what you can give the person with a pet theme in mind. Now I do not mean to give the person something for their pet but to choose a gift for your friend that is based on a pet theme.

Horse people are particularly easy to buy for, in that, there are a great number of horse related gifts available and are fairly easy to find. Price does not have to be an issue as you will find when you start looking that horse type gifts are available in all price ranges and to suit all pocket books. For example a lovely horse design afghan or throw may cost $50.00 while a circle of horses candle holder could be under $20.00.

Interestingly enough when buying a horse type gift for someone you do not have to worry about getting one that seems too personal, in that, the love of horses eliminates the possibility of making this kind of faux pas. For example, you may feel that buying a blouse or sweater for a friend is something to shy away from for fear of it being considered too personal for a gift when you can certainly buy that person a T-Shirt depicting a horse with no qualms whatsoever.

Having said all of this about buying an animal person a gift for themselves, truthfully, I have never met an animal lover that would not appreciate receiving a gift for their special pet in lieu of something for themselves. This of course, opens up all sorts of possibilities for gift giving.

There are lots of places to look for animal type gifts from the plaza gift shop to the World Wide Web. Where ever you choose to look and whatever you choose to buy, rest assured, your animal friend will thank you for your thoughtfulness.

Bedroom Wall Decor - Fun Step For Your Distinctive Style

Many people neglect the bedroom and put more focus on home décor to the more visited rooms of the house. There are four types of bedrooms that maybe in your home. The masters, babies, teen and guest are all places where someone relaxes or sleeps. Today we are discussing the master bedroom where most of all your personality should shine through your choices of décor. This is your place of peace in other words your sanctuary.

One of the first things you notice when you walk into a room are the walls. If your walls are drab and bare so is the feeling that encompasses you. You need to make one or more walls the focus point to your bedroom. The walls should be designed with comfort and relaxation in mind. The bedroom should become your stress free haven.

Acquiring any form of wall décor is a fun step in the process of turning a house into a home. For any new project it is important to first determine your destination. Then determine the best path to reach your end vision. This quest can be difficult but I do hope to provide you with some guidance that will allow you to make the decisions that fit your home décor interests.

There are a vast variety of options to allow your walls to come alive with exuberance. From innovative lighting techniques to a collage of your family portraits can give you the outlet to let your creative juices flow. You need to choose a theme; color scheme and style then let your imagination run wild. Most importantly the beauty of the end result will be totally unique and will express your personality.

It use to be a privilege of the very wealthy to spend on original artwork. Today on the internet or at craft stores you can find a wide range of inexpensive canvases, paints, kits and frames to create original striking pieces of art. This outlet lets you become expressively creative in harmonizing with your other décor in the room. You might consider painting a small picture on one wall. Certain finishes such as faux can be used to create a pattern of design to make the wall vivid and interesting. This technique will inspire all those who view it.

Stenciling offers the opportunity to achieve a personal finish. Stencils have grown in popularity due to the ease of applying the design using the proper techniques. You can buy stencils and pick your dominant colors from the rest of your furnishings and put them in a restrained way on your walls.

Wallpaper murals are a great alternative for those interested in a picture as the focal point but do not have the talent or time to do this themselves. Wallpaper murals can transform your bedroom into a spring garden or into a balcony that over looks the ocean. Many murals use certain colors that can be drawn deeper into your room which will extend the texture and dimension of your room. What ever theme you choose the wall mural will add beauty and truly make your bedroom a sanctuary.

Lighting in a room is very important. There are three types of lighting general, task and accent. The use of these different types of lighting will change the way you see and feel in the room. Using accent lighting will add drama and will highlight the areas you wish to bring into focus.

Mirrors, wall sconces and clocks add a touch of glamour to any space on your walls. Bedroom mirrors create the illusion of more space and elegant living. Wall sconces with mirrors add a great deal of texture, interest and modern design to your walls. By adding a clock to an empty wall can make your walls go from boring to brilliant. Wall sconce candle holders with their mystical glow can change the entire mood of the bedroom. It can change your plain bedroom into a haven of romance or allow your mind and body to relax. Fragrant candles can make you feel like you have been whisked away to another place and time. They add a soft subtle light and distinctive style. Wall candle sconces are one of the most affordable decorating options that will never go out of style.

Bedroom wall shelves makes for an appealing wall and keeps you organized. The wall shelf gives you additional storage space and helps you display your books, knick knacks and collectibles. Most wall shelves are easy to attach to the walls, increases the value of your home and adds a decorative element to the room.

Wallpaper is ideal for making your bedroom walls take notice. Light colored wall paper is perfect for smaller rooms. For larger rooms darker shades give you a cozier feeling as long as you have sunlight streaming in through your windows. Horizontal stripes makes the room look wider while vertical stripes make the room look longer. There are abstract designed wallpaper that can give more of a contemporary look and a floral print always gives you that pleasant effect. Wallpaper borders are an essential accessory for wall décor that is sometimes over looked. A wallpaper border is a strip of wallpaper that runs parallel to the floor on the wall at the junction where the wall and floor meet. They give a sense of finality and completeness to the wall. Some wallpaper come with matching borders. Some are of patterns while others are solid but both will enhance and highlight your walls. Borders seem to add that dramatic and sophisticated look and finish.

A beautifully woven wall tapestry may be all you need to pull the room together. Most of us can't afford to go on vacations every day but a tapestry with a stunning theme can take you away for a short time. They seem to elude tranquility; romance and a means of escape that we need for our bodies to replenish daily.

There are no limitations in front of you. Let what's inside of you inspire you. You will rise with the end result and triumph with an exquisite masterpiece.

Theme Bathrooms? Why Not!

It's true: Theme decorated bathrooms are not for everyone. To some, just the phrase "theme decorating" inspires sneers and visual signs of disgust. But, theme bathrooms don't have to be over the top. In fact, some are so subtle, that guests may not even realize that you decorated using a theme.

Yes, some people take their theme just as far as they can. One woman wanted a jungle theme for her guest bathroom. Guests had to wind their way around a 6-foot-tall metal giraffe while trying to get over the shock of seeing the wildest animal print wallpaper that you can imagine. Even the toilet lid was in on the act: It was in the shape of a lion with his mouth open wide.

Another homeowner wanted to bring her collection of ceramic cows into the bathroom. She painted huge cow spots all over the wall. The rugs were cow spots, the accessories were cow spots....it was too much!

You don't have to take your theme decorating nearly that far. Here are three ideas to get your created juices flowing.

Animals

Now is as good a time as any to point out the fact that not every theme is appropriate for every bathroom. An animal bathroom might not be the best choice for your master bath, but if there are children in your home with their own bathroom, it can be a very cute choice.

Younger children especially will love being able to look at all the animals while they are in the bathroom. Keep it cute, light and whimsical. Find wallpaper with animals and then cut the animals out and make a fun border of as many different animals as possible. Buy soaps in animal shapes and find a shower curtain covered in bright colorful animals or animal shapes.

Remember, it's a child's room so different rules apply. Have fun with it, and make it interesting for your child. To make this room easier to transition when your child is no longer young enough to appreciate this theme, avoid hanging wallpaper. Instead, choose a neutral color paint and bring in elements of bright color with the accessories and border.

Beach

This is a great theme to use in a bathroom, and it's easy to understand why. Who doesn't want to feel as if they have a beach getaway right in their own home? While your bathroom certainly won't be a replacement for a vacation to your favorite hot spot, it can be a beautiful reminder of times you spent playing in the surf and sand. Hang some white bead board and then paint the walls a shade of blue that reminds you of the sky. Use sand colored bathmats and seashells and glass jars filled with sands as accessories. Find or make a sign that says "Beach House" , "Ocean" or something similar and hang them on the walls. Beach themed accessories are easy to find, and you can use as many or as few as you want.

Even if your beach theme consists of nothing more than a color palette that reminds you of the ocean, that's fine. Remember, the theme is just to give you inspiration for how to decorate the room. You can borrow several elements from your theme, or just take one or two.

Art Lover

Think of a beautiful art museum and the many wonderful things you find there. This theme will work especially well in a large bathroom where there is room to add architectural details as well as prints of a few of your favorite masterpieces.

Tumbled tiles, or other material that looks "old" will lend itself well to this particular theme. As with the other themes, you are free to borrow several elements or just one.

Remember that the point is to take something that you find beautiful and find ways to bring that beauty into your home. That doesn't mean that you have to copy your source of inspiration piece for piece. Even if you never thought theme decorating was for you, perhaps now you'll at least give it a try!

Ideas for a Beautiful Bathroom

When decorating a home, the bathroom is often done last, and sometimes is overlooked completely. When you consider that the main bathroom is very likely to be seen by most of your guests, it makes sense to put the same time and effort into decorating it as you do the other rooms in your home.

Because the typical bathroom is much smaller than other rooms, it presents a special set of challenges when it comes to decorating. With some planning, though, your bathroom can look just as beautiful as every other room in your home. Here are some ideas to help you get started.

Themes

Theme decorated rooms aren't for everyone. Some who would never use a theme in any other space will do so in the bathroom. Because the room is small, you're less likely to overdo the theme as you might in a larger room. Some theme ideas: beach house, the ocean, lighthouses, jungle, there is no limit to the possibilities.

Some people are completely turned off by the thought of themed decorating. That may be because they think it means going crazy with the theme and covering every available surface with reminders of that theme. Instead, remember that theme decorating doesn't have to (and ideally doesn't) mean you hang photos of lighthouses everywhere. The theme can be incorporated as much or as little as you choose.

For example, if you choose a beach theme, you may choose colors that remind you of the beach such as sand colored tile for the floor and blue paint for the walls. For accessories, place some shells in glass jars. Then, if you want to further incorporate your theme, you can add beach photos or prints and other nautical themed accessories. The key is to have fun with it, and remember that theme decorating can be as elegant or as over-the-top as you choose.

Mirrors

Mirrors in a bathroom. No surprise there, but a decorating option that is often overlooked for a bathroom is adding extra mirrors besides the one that is hanging over the sink. Hanging a decorative mirror in a bathroom can add elegance and help to make a small room look larger. Of course, it may also come in handy when there is more than one person trying to get ready in the morning. Even if your bathroom is already large, a decorative mirror can become a focal point and help to ground all of your other decorative elements.

Metal Wall Hanging

If you'd rather not add another mirror to your bathroom, another option could be a well-placed metal wall hanging. Naturally, this will not work in every situation, but if you are trying to create a bathroom that exudes simple elegance; a metal wall hanging would be a great option. Because these hangings are available in so many sizes and shapes, it's easy to find one to fit the awkward walls that are sometimes present in a bathroom.

Paint

Obviously, choosing the correct paint color can make or break your attempt at decorating. But when painting a bathroom, the type of paint is even more important than the color. Because the bathroom paint must be able to withstand high humidity during those extra long showers, you will want to choose a paint that can stand up to such conditions. That means choosing a high gloss finish. This finish is washable and can stand up to humidity without peeling. You should also use a good primer before applying your paint. This will help your paint last longer and will discourage peeling and sagging.

Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important decorative choices you will make in any room, and the bathroom is no exception. While you want the lighting to be beautiful, it also needs to be functional, especially in a room where hair is fussed over and makeup is applied. If there is a lighting feature that you cannot resist, but it provides insufficient light, consider adding recessed lighting. A little off the subject, but still related: Adding hanging candle holders can help create a relaxing atmosphere and add "mood" lighting whenever you want it.

Hopefully, these ideas and tips have inspired to tackle the task of decorating your bathroom. Whether you choose to create an elegant retreat or a whimsical room, careful planning will help you design a room that you will enjoy for years to come.

Micro Model Trains

When I was a boy they used to always rerun an old sixties movie where scientists shrink a space ship and go into this patient's body to try to cure him of the medical condition he is suffering from. What was it called? "Fantastic Journey", maybe? I'm not sure. Other movies have shown people shrinking down or getting bigger but that's the one that really stuck with me. Well, that's the sensation that a lot of us get when we look at miniature trains. We are just lured into the tiny world of these intriguing and oddly realistic model trains. Here's what's great about these trains:

The smallest trains you can buy:

How small? Real locomotives are 160 times the dimensions of an N scale train. That means that N scale trains are about the size of a ruler. If you think that's tiny, Z scale is even tinier--1/220th the size of real trains!

No matter how small your space, you can surely fit a micro train there.

Because they're so small you can fit these tiny little guys almost anywhere. A 2' x 4' area is more than enough room for these guys. It's probably best to have a domino table for your tiny trains but if you don't want to go to this expense you can place them on a dining room table. What would it be like to be in that little landscape whizzing by tooth pick farms, porcelain cowboys and ceramic chickens and cows? Amazing Journey indeed!

Here are some draw backs:

I hear they torture sweet old grannies with trembling arthritic fingers and weak vision in some countries by making them detail N and Z scale trains

Crafts activities are definitely out with these tiny mechanical wonders. Because these trains are so small people just get generic landscapes and accessories. Don't even try detailing or decaling these guys.

Tiny toy trains are DANGEROUS for small children:

Since these model trains are so small you'll want to be careful that you don't let little hands get a hold of them. Z scale is even more hazardous!

If you don't like to play "Where's the Z", z-scale may not be for you:

Because it is so tiny, z scale does not offer you a lot of varied choices when it comes to trains and accessories.

Put simply, these are really great. There's something strange yet familiar about seeing a shrunken little world--we're drawn to it like we are to miniatures of all kinds! Gulliver and the Jolly Green Giant can tell you all about it.

Orange You Glad it Can Be a Candle Holder?

Does your desk look blah? How can you make your room more creative? One way is to accentuate your house and interiors with candles. Candles have proven to be great in livening up the house, and remain to be popular. There are many candles to choose from, with different shapes, sizes and colors. Candles can be used as a centerpiece in tables. The dining table or the long table by the kitchen can be given more oomph with a good tablecloth, a table cloth centerpiece and a candle at the center, besides a small potted flower or a decorative, sculpted object. To push your creativity to the limits, why not try using candle holder?

Candles holders provide elevation for candles, and add to the symbolic image of the candle. They can be placed by the table or attached to walls. Either way, candle holders often come with a variety of design. The material which the candle holder is made of is often metal. Metal is good because the wiring can be molded and adjusted to any shape or form. Plus, because metal is durable, it is easy to remove all the wax that has melted from the candle without damaging the candle holder per se. Candle holders are often in neutral colors such as bronze, gold, silver or black. These colors are best because they mostly go well with the rest of the furniture in the house, so it is easy to mix and match your interior designs. When buying candle holders, try to be perceptive and choosy by focusing on intricate details which are carved in the candle holders, or the shape or form in which the wires are twisted.

There are some designs available that are quite unique. In fact, a newly invented candle holder was made out of orange rinds. Beelman1802, an online blog, posts ideas on how to create specially personalized and handmade candles, especially seasonal ones. Basically, the orange candle holder is created by slicing an orange in half, removing the meat inside, and then cutting out a hole at the center, where a tea-light candle can be pushed through. As the tea-light candle burns, its scent is mixed with the scent of the oranges, giving out a natural aroma that spreads across the room.

Candles are often used for aromatherapy. In fact, most spas or parlors use scented spa candles, and organic candles such as beeswax candles. The scents from these candles can modify one's moods and feelings, and provides a feeling of relaxation and freshness.

Contemporary Home Decor Ideas

Contemporary home decor can work for either men or women. You could find it in a country home or a bachelor pad. It is the perfect style for anyone who likes a bright and airy look and enjoys being on the cutting edge of fashion. Here are some tips for contemporary home decor even if you are on a budget.

Stick with neutral colors. Contemporary design focuses on light and space. If you want more of a modern look then you can go with bright pops of color. Contemporary means whatever is popular right now. This can be disastrous if you invest a lot of money in a really wild sofa because it will only be in style for a few months. Instead, go with the more neutral side of contemporary that you can transition into the latest cutting edge designs later on.

Make a big impact with your lighting. Contemporary home decor might seem boring or even sparse. This is why you need to make the utilitarian pieces in your room special. You could add colorful glass pendant shades to the fixtures over your kitchen island. Find lamps with intricate paper shades so they look like works of art.

Use oversized artwork and accessories. Contemporary spaces don't use a lot of accessories so the ones that you do use should really make an impact. Lately there's been a trend of really enormous table lamps that look like bottles. This is the place where you can bring in color. Look to the latest fashion colors because those will usually correspond with what is going on in the home design world.

Focus in on shapes. Theme rooms really aren't a part of contemporary design. Instead you need to make more subtle connections. You could base a room around squares by using boxy furniture. You could even stretch fabric over canvas to make wall art. Another popular theme is circles. You can see this lot in kid's rooms and nurseries but it could also work in a colorful home office. Keep the walls a bright white so the shapes really pop out. For a teens' room use vivid blues, hot pinks and greens. In a living room chocolate brown and turquoise seem to be the must have colors.

Contemporary home decor can work in all different rooms in your house. It's constantly changing and evolving so be prepared to move along with it. You can even build your room over time so at least one piece is always in style.

Caring For Gemstone Candle Holders

Gemstone refers to a variety of semi-precious rocks or minerals, which can be used for decorative or ornamental purposes. They are usually characterized by vibrant colors, unique formations, and sometimes by the extremely polished nature of the surface. There are a wide variety of materials that are termed gemstone, and often the actual classification of what can or can not be called such is a little fuzzy. The basic requisite is attractiveness of features.

When it comes to candle holders, almost any type of gemstone can and will be used. Generally the material is taken raw, and drilled with a candle hole. Other times the material is polished or refined in some way, and then fitted with a candle cup.

The idea is that the flickering light of the candle reflects off the multifaceted face of the material, creating an interplay which can be quite lovely. Often this effect will be enhanced, if the stone is clear, or translucent, allowing the light to penetrate its surface and causing the entire piece to glow.

When cleaning a gemstone candle holder, it is important to be careful, and understand the nature of the material, in order to avoid ruining it by using the wring cleaning agent.

Some gemstone materials may discolor when they come in contact with harsh acidic soaps. If you do use soap, make certain that it is very mild, and dilute it heavily with water. Using a non acidic cleansing agent would work even better.

In general the safest method for cleaning a gemstone candle holder is to just use a damp cloth to wipe away any excess dust that may settle on the piece. If wax gets stuck to the gemstone, you can try running the piece under warm water to loosen it. Be careful not to soak any backing material too much or it may come loose.

You have to be especially careful of clear gemstone pieces, as they can become clouded when they come in contact with certain agents. Depending on the porosity of the material, certain liquids may enter these stones, causing them to stain. Again, the safest route is generally to just use warm water.

In general gemstone candle holders should not need much maintenance. If you just dust them off every once in a while, and are careful to keep their surfaces clear of dripping wax, they will generally continue to look like new virtually forever.

The Upside of Buying a Duvet Cover Set

Instead of buying a single pink duvet or duvet cover, why not opt for an entire pink duvet cover set. Sets are often much cheaper than buying the pieces separately, and you can be sure all of your bedding will match. These sets are a great way to improve the overall look of your bedroom whether you are buying for a friend, daughter or even yourself.

Where you buy your pink duvet cover set from will determine how many pieces come with your set. The duvet or duvet pink cover and the matching pillow shams are what are included in most sets. To get your entire bedding set to match, try buying at least a 5 piece pink cover set. Included in these will usually be the duvet or duvet cover, pillow shams, sheets and most often, a bed skirt. Make sure the pink quilt set that you buy is made of the material and the thread count that you desire.

You can choose silk or satin materials for your duvet set, but most common sets are made of Egyptian and regular cotton. Depending on the amount of money you want to spend, and the softness you require, your thread count can range from 80 to 1,400. Usually anything from 200 to 400 is a good quality set. You will spend more money for anything over 400, but whether it is worth it or not is up to you. Your pink duvet cover sets thread count will really depend on how you judge the thread count quality.

Your budget and personal taste will be the judge when it comes to choosing the best duvet set. It is a smart idea to shop around on the internet for duvet sets, even if you plan to purchase yours at a local store. Doing this gives you a good idea of the pattern and color options that you can choose from.

Beginning Sewing - Setting Up Your Sewing Area

What you really need is a work surface where you can use your sewing machine. You can make do with a kitchen table or office desk if you must. You will probably become tired or sore more quickly at a workstation of this type because it is really too high. A better choice is a sewing machine cabinet. There are cabinets where your sewing machine actually attaches to the inside of the cabinet or cabinets where your machine sits in a lowered area of the top surface and can be lifted out. Either type of table only requires a small amount of floor space and some of the built-in types allow the machine to drop down when not in use then half of the table top folds over, turning the unit into a small multi-purpose table.

Most sewing cabinets also have some sort of storage. Some have cabinet doors that swing open to allow knee room when you are sitting at them and, mounted inside the doors, there are spindles for storing thread spools. Some cabinets have drawers for your sewing tools and accessories. You will undoubtedly need more storage space than your sewing cabinet provides so you might want to consider some other storage as well.

Sets of plastic drawers on casters normally sold for craft storage, scrapbooking storage, etc. are a good alternative because you can easily roll them wherever you need them. Other options are stackable plastic boxes. They can even be hidden away in a closet. The storage boxes that fit under your bed can be used too. Better yet, sew a storage device! You can find creative projects for storage in all kinds of places. Just keep your eyes open.

12-14" long magnetic bars for holding tools can be mounted to a wall. They can be found for about $10 a pair at the hardware store. The magnets are strong and easily hold sheers, scissors, seam rippers, and even whole packages of needles.

Fabric storage and pattern storage are the two biggest issues. For fabric, if you don't have a dedicated sewing room, some choices are those under-the-bed boxes with lids to keep the dust out. Another option is to fold each piece of fabric over a wire clothes hanger and hang in it a closet.

There are cardboard boxes you can buy that are just the right size for patterns but if you don't fold the pattern just right to get it back in the original package, they won't fit anymore. Standard file folder storage boxes from any office supply store work better. Two patterns will fit side by side along the longer (legal size) side and if you have one that won't go back in the package, stick it in a clear ziplock freezer bag to keep all the pieces together and it will still fit in the file folder box.

A great way to store current projects you are working on, whether it's a pattern being altered or cut pieces you haven't sewn together yet, is to fold them over a wire clothes hanger and clip a regular clothes-pin or two on to hold everything. Then put the hanger in a closet. When you are ready to work again, simply pull the hanger out and everything is there together and flat and ready to go. If you have several projects on the go at once, make sure the pattern name or number is facing out when you hang it. Then you can easily look through the hangers to find the one you want. You can even attach the original pattern envelope to the hanger with a clothespin for easy identification.

For cutting out patterns, most people use their kitchen table, a craft table, the floor, or even their bed. Any large flat surface will do. Again, if the surface is too high or too low for you, you will find you get tired or sore quickly. An ideal surface is a table with a hard, smooth surface that is 30-36" high (if you stand to cut). If you like to sit down to cut, a 26-30" high table is better. The table should ideally be about 4 -6 feet long and a width you can comfortably reach across. If you prefer to cut from a sitting position, make your table narrow enough that you can reach across it from your chair.

If you can afford it, the largest size cutting mat available for use with a rotary cutter makes a great table top. I actually use my table more for pattern adjusting and pressing than I do for cutting. A layer of ¼" thick cork is glued (with contact cement) to the arborite top of the table, allowing me to pin straight down into it. The cork seems to be heat resistant too. I plan to glue another layer of cork to the existing one to give the pins a little more to stick into. I tape a layer of plain white paper over the cork and use a marking pen to mark a grid or part of a grid on the paper. I need these lines to keep everything square when altering patterns. When needed, I replace the paper.

If I want a large surface for use with the rotary cutter, I use two cutting mats taped together on the bottom side with duct tape. I have to snip a thread or two the blade misses where the joint in the cutting board is but that's not a big deal. These smaller mats fold up for easy storage and I'm back to my cork table again.

Next you need to think about a pressing area. As you sew, it is necessary to press seams. An iron and ironing board will do the job but, in a pinch, you can layer several towels on an arborite table or counter and use that. (The iron's heat may damage some surfaces.) You can even buy special heat-resistant material to cover your surface with, making it more suitable for ironing on. The cork table works well to press on too.

An ironing board isn't ideal for pressing while sewing. It really isn't wide enough or sturdy enough. When you are adhering interfacing, for example, you need to put quite a lot of pressure on the iron. Your ironing board may crumble under that pressure but a counter-top or a table can take the pressure as long as it can also take the heat and steam.

The chair you sit in while sewing is very important. A comfortable one that swivels and rolls is a very good choice. Bear in mind that your feet must reach the floor to work the sewing machine pedal. Good back support will enable you to sew in comfort for longer periods of time.

Flooring in your sewing area is a bit controversial. I prefer linoleum so when pins drop they are easy to pick up (use a magnetic pin holder for quick retrieval) and for smooth and easy rolling of the chair but some people prefer carpet because it's softer to stand on.

A smooth floor has the disadvantage of allowing the foot pedal to scoot around. This can be solved by putting a small rectangle of rubber shelf liner under the pedal. The same material under a serger will keep it from vibrating around on its table too.

One of the most important reasons I have a dedicated sewing room with a door is to keep my cats out. Not only don't I want their hair on every project I make but if they play with spools of thread and get it caught on their rough tongues, they will swallow a bunch of it that will hurt them internally. Cats and thread don't mix!

My sewing room also has a TV and a DVD/VCR so I can watch sewing programs or whatever as I sew. If you're not a TV addict like me, perhaps you would enjoy some music or a relaxing mix of nature sounds while you sew.

A window is nice if you can manage that. With or without a window, excellent lighting is extremely important (especially as your eyes get older). Set up whatever lamps you need so your eyes are not straining. Try to find natural daylight simulation bulbs so colors will appear accurate. You don't want to put a dark navy zipper in a black pair of pants by accident!

For convenience, I also keep a portable phone handy while I'm sewing. It never fails, the phone always rings when my hands are full. Also keep a bottle of water nearby. Bottles don't spill as easily as glasses.

Sewing can be such an enjoyable, relaxing experience that you might be surprised how many hours will fly by. I try to set aside 1 or 2 days each weekend to sew. That's my little treat to myself after working all week. My washer and dryer are in the sewing room so I do laundry as I sew and I find it a very efficient use of my time. Sewing makes the tedious chore of laundry more enjoyable.

Happy Sewing!

Rustic Lodge Decorating Tips

"Rustic" is so often accompanied by the word "charm" so that the two words have become inseparable. With the addition of a couple more words like "comforting" or "relaxing" and you will have summed up the appeal of this decorating form.

Even if you have never done home decorating, getting the rustic decorating style in your home is easy and fun to do.

Rustic in the old days used to conjure up "unsteady and mean cheap," but believe me, this kind of thinking is now gone. Rustic decor is now on the verge of being sophisticated and trendy.

The great outdoors might seem an alternate world away from the city but bringing it home shouldn't be difficult. Nor is it necessary to sacrifice modern sensibilities in the acquisition of a little charm.

Develop a plan and do your research. Start by choosing your colors, furniture and accessories wisely. These are the key parts of decorating if you want to pull off the natural and cozy look of the rustic lodge style in your home.

Some people mistakenly believe that rustic home décor means that there are wildlife or farm animals plastered all over it. It is not. If you want your décor to revolve around items that don't depict animals, you can find lots of items that can fit your desire for a rustic lodge home décor.

Rustic decorating is all about connecting with the outdoors. A memory of a deep woods fishing lodge, summer vacation at a mountain retreat or just a love of the outdoors, there's something comfortable and cozy about a rustic theme.

Wood furniture, warm colors, items inspired by nature, as well as Native American prints and pottery are just a few of the things that can add that warm, rustic touch without any animals coming into play. If you do want furnishings and accessories that portray wildlife or farm animals, you will certainly have plenty of décor items from which to choose.

Hardwood floors are perfect for the rustic look, but you want to add some area rugs for comfort and softness as well as to reduce the "echo" effect.

Dating from a time in history when it was "the best we could do with what we had", rustic has been around "forever". Maintaining a minor but consistent following, rustic decor should continue to hold its place on the decorating scene -without marked peaks or valleys- far into the future.

You should use earthy and natural colors for your palette. You can add a unique touch with photos, artwork and knick-knacks in addition to your sofa and chairs. You may want to end up with a natural and rustic style by using natural log furniture. Picking your furniture and accessories with care will help hone your own Rustic decorating design style.

Your decorating accessories should focus on pieces from nature or pieces that have an outdoorsy feel like old fishing items, baskets and snowshoes. Window treatments for this decorating style should be plain and natural - nothing frilly or formal. You might think about using wood blinds, plain sheers or a simple valance or a stained glass window panel.

When decorating, you should also consider the lighting. Lighting is as important as choosing the accessories for the house. The lighting should give an earthy look that will enhance the beauty of the room.

Living rooms usually have table lamps for lighting and you want to use ones that are earthy with natural themes to accentuate the rustic room design.

A rustic home with sufficient ceiling space opens the door to the world of chandelier lighting. Choosing the right chandelier light is another matter and depends on your lodge theme or rustic motif. There are magnificent chandelier collections available that will solve that dilemma quickly.

If you are looking for rustic charm with a little more sophistication, try metal chandeliers shaped like elements of nature. Chandeliers with pinecone shaped light holders or chandeliers designed to look as if leafs are hanging from the lights make attractive choices.

Deciding upon the right style, size and design of chandelier lighting for a room is a critical decorating decision, as one would prefer to install a hanging chandelier only once. There are very large and varied chandelier collections of rustic lodge chandelier, unique stained glass chandelier as well as very elegant chandelier designs.

You will find many chandelier styles from which to choose. The amount of decorative chandelier, kitchen chandelier and dining room chandelier models, sizes, colors and designs to choose from will astound you. Whatever your theme is rustic, southwestern, country, traditional, Tiffany, Mission or contemporary; there are chandeliers and other lighting fixtures to fulfill your needs.

Rustic wall sconces in one to four light configurations fit any rustic theme, from cabin to sophisticated rustic. Nature scenes and wildlife in metal and stained or painted glass are great for next to the hearth, in hallways and bathrooms. Or any place you need light.

The actual lighting can take on all shapes, sizes, and forms of woodlands. A charming centerpiece capable of holding tapered candles can be the perfect choice for your dining room table. This can be complimented beautifully by a rustic lodge chandelier in the main living area or by a rustic lodge lamp on an end table. Lodge look floor lamps can also be used to lighten up a dull drab corner and at the same time add the rustic charm to the atmosphere.

Therefore, whether you are decorating a foyer kitchen, bedroom, bath or living room or a magnificently furnished rustic great room or trophy room, we can help you light up your home brilliantly.

It is not necessary that every part of your home decor should necessarily be rustic. Even adding a few indoor or outdoor rustic decorations can give a rustic feel to your home. All you need is a bit research on the accessories and color theme.

Metal Art Candle Holders

Candles have been around for a long time, which means that candle holder have too. And artistic metal stands, what we today would call metal art candle holders' have been found at many ancient archaeological digs. Oil lamps were the first form of artificial lighting discovered by man. The light given off by a cloth wick in a pool of oil allowed ancient man to function even after the sun went down. The problem with oil is that being liquid, it was difficult to store and if the oil spilled from a burning lamp, it could cause either a fire or sever burns to the flesh. Although oil lamps continued to be in use till the advent of electricity, the discovery that solidified animal fat would provide and equally good sources of fuel to a burning wick caused the candle to come into being and its popularity soon equaled and often overtook that of the oil lamp.

Since candles are, because of their shape, intrinsically unstable, candle holders were required. The earliest known ones were just flat pieces of metal with a point or pin on the surface to which a candle could be firmly fixed. Once this purpose was achieved, metal workers looked towards enhancing their visual appeal and making them items of beauty. Thus was born the metal art candle holder.

Although nearly all modern indoor lighting is done by electricity, candle and metal art candle holders remain popular. There is nothing like soft candle light to add romance and atmosphere to a room. And if the candle is fitted to a metal art candle holder, the appeal is greatly enhanced. An enduring image is of the romantic dinner for two with a gleaming candelabra in the middle of the table. The candelabra is a metal art candle holder! Besides the effect of candle light, a surprising number of people still prefer to use candles indoors as they feel that candle light adds energy to a home.

Metal art candle holders are a great way to decorate and add character to your home. Even is you do not want to actually use them, their presence adds glamour to a room. Metal art candle holders can range from a wrought iron piece of elaborate design for holding one candle to large pieces that hold many. These can be table pieces as in the case of candelabras, to wall fixtures and even old fashioned candle fitted chandeliers.

Available in a wide rage of metals, from simple wrought iron or steel to sterling sliver and gold, metal art candle holders need not be conventional in design. Many artists produce metal art candle holders in modern designs using modern metals such a stainless steel, aluminum and a variety of alloys.

Turn off the electric lights and try using candles on elegant metal art candle holders to light up a room. The warmth and atmosphere that candle light creates may tempt you to think of candle light not just a back up in times of power outages, but as a part of your lifestyle. Metal art candle holders are not just decorative items in themselves, but when put to use, can change the whole tone and mood of a room.

Types of Curtains

There are many types of curtains and drapes. They come in different kinds of fabric, sizes and styles. The most common styles are tabbed, pole pocket, grommet, pinch-pleat, tie-top and swags.

Tabbed curtains have "tabs" on the top. They are usually rectangular shaped and hang on the rod. The size of rod needed depends on the size of the tabs. They are easy to hang on rods because rings or clips are not needed.

Another easy curtain to hang is pole pocket curtains. Like the tabbed style, rings and clips are not needed. The rod goes through the "pole pocket." Also like the tabbed style, the size of rod depends on the inside diameter of the pocket. Use a rod with a smaller diameter than the pocket, so the curtains can move along the rod.

Grommet drapes have gained popularity lately. Grommets are usually round, metal or plastic rings that are sewn into the drapes. The drapery rod is threaded through the grommets. They provide a very clean look. Chose your drapery rod at least one-half inch smaller than the inside diameter of the grommets to ensure easy movement of the drapes.

The pinch-pleated style have pleats along the top of the curtains. They gather nicely along the rod. Pleated style need rings to hang on a rod. Rings with eyelets can be sewn directly to the pleats on the back of the fabric or attach to pincer clips which "pinch" onto the fabric. Another option is to use clips that are sewn or otherwise attached to the back of the pleats and go through the ring eyelets.

Another type of curtain is the tie-top. The top of the fabric has several ties that "tie" around the rod. They can be knotted or tied in bows.

Swag curtains are pieces of fabric that hang over and around the rod. There are many ways to "swag" the curtains over the rod. They can be used with other types of curtains since swags usually hang over the top of the rod. Almost any size rod will work with swags.
