Rustic Country Decor - How to Decorate Cottage Style Homes

Rustic country decor and how to decorate cottage style homes are extensions of American country style decorating. In addition, traditions are borrowed from French, English and some Swedish country looks. Rustic country decor can be defined as coarse, charmingly simple, unfussy, unfinished and yet with endearing qualities. Rustic country decorating includes the use of natural woods, aged surfaces, rough finishes and simple lines. Cottage style homes are comfortable, modest, quaint homes that can be made of thick stone or log wood.

Floors in rustic country decor and cottage style homes are made with stone or wood materials. Wooden floors were traditionally constructed with boards that were bare and simply waxed and hand-polished (high-gloss varnishes did not exist). Sometimes the boards were painted with light colors. If you like floor coverings, use oriental rugs and throws for visual warmth and color. Rustic country decor is about handcrafted objects, simplicity, furnishings that you enjoy and connecting back to nature.

Rustic cottage furniture is commonly made with pine and perhaps painted with hand-painted designs such as flowers, birds, animals, country scenery or leaves. Use ladderback chairs, rocking chairs, benches, wicker furniture and Windsor chairs. A large rectangular table made of pine is a good option for your kitchen or dining room table. To give your furniture a rustic look, brush a coat of paint on the furniture piece, then rub most of the paint off. After it dries, apply wood stain unevenly for an older weathered appearance. It will be perfect and rustic looking!

Baskets can be used to store wood, pine cones, flowers, plants and needlework. Brass candle holders, oil or kerosene lamps, sconces, hurricane lamps, tin lanterns, recessed ceiling fixtures or a vintage wrought-iron or metal chandelier provide successful lighting for rustic country decor and cottage style homes. Colors used in rustic country decor or cottage style homes are neutral tones ranging from white to bone, earth tones, red barn, blues and greens.

For rustic country decor in the kitchen, use open shelves, hutches, buffets, plate racks and cupboards for storage. Often, country kitchen storage is crammed with stoneware pots, plain glazed earthenware and glass jars. Kitchen pots should be made of copper, steel or cast iron -- cookware tends to be large and plain. Use open shelving in the rustic country kitchen to display plates, dishes and dinnerware collections. Natural woods, light colors and bright fabrics work great for window treatments. Adding a rustic butcher block island creates a wonderful visual effect as well as provides useful functionality.

A rustic country decor bathroom has neutral tones or soft colored walls, antique-looking lighting, and wooden antiques or antique reproduction cabinets and vanity. Knowing how to decorate cottage style homes and bathrooms can result in creating a calm and elegant atmosphere. Clawfoot tubs, pedestal sinks, country style antique brass faucets and old-fashioned country cabinets provide the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to spend time there. Plain white towels are recommended instead of patterned or bright modern patterns. Use wicker or wire baskets to keep your sponges, loofas and shampoos handy near the tub or shower.

Understanding how to decorate cottage style homes means including items like quilts, antique furniture or reproductions, flea-market pieces, trunks, chests, armoires, stenciling, wallpaper, adirondack chairs, flower wreaths and bistro chairs. These types of elements give cottage style homes the kind of rustic country decor that is simpler, very personal and warmly inviting.

Whether in a seaside setting, an urban environment, a countryside location or a wooded mountain retreat, cottage style homes are cozy and unassuming, combining the past with the present. Read all you can find and learn what creating the rustic country cottage means to you no matter where it's located. Enjoy expressing your personality and showing what the definition of home means to you.

The Camper's Delight - Wax Fire Starters

I am a big fan of camping, at least until I get out to it. Usually, my biggest gripe with camping is trying to get a campfire lit to take the chill out of the morning. Everyone is huddled around a dead campfire, teeth chattering, waiting for something to happen so they can warm up after a cool night in the tent and start making breakfast.

It never fails, the campfire takes longer than it did the night before but if you have the camper's secret weapon, wax fire starters, you can get those campfires going in no time. Not only are the wax fire starters weather resistant and handy, they are also a great way to get rid of your excess candle wax that you have lying around the house.

When it comes to making the Wax Fire Starters, it is very easy to make. You should be careful since you will be working with hot wax and this is not an activity that I would recommend that you do with kids. It is a craft that doesn't need too many supplies and they are fairly inexpensive to make.

What you need:

o Old wax (this can be old candles or even crayons. You could also go and purchase wax from a craft store)

o Sawdust or wood chips

o Dryer Lint

o Muffin Tin

o Wax Muffin Cups

o Double boiler

Directions:

1. Remove all the wicks and wrappings from the candles and crayons. Set them aside.

2. Place all the old wax into the double boiler and melt on medium-low heat. If you don't have a double boiler, use a coffee can or a boil and place it inside a pot filled with a few inches of water. Make sure to keep the water level high enough to burn the pot and also be careful not to spill the bowl.

3. Before you begin melting the wax, fill the muffin tin with the muffin cups.

4. Add some dryer lint to the muffin cups.

5. With the sawdust or wood chips, there are two ways that you can use them. The first way is to add them to the melted wax, making a wax and wood mixture. The second is to add them to the muffin cups. It is simply a matter of preference and I don't think one works better than the other.

6. After the wax has melted completely, carefully pour it into each of the muffin cups. Make sure to leave about half an inch between the top of the tin and the wax.

7. Set to the side and allow them to cool completely.

8. Store them in plastic baggies for the camping trip. The best way is to wrap them individually in a paper towel so there is no chance that they will melt and stick together.

Once you are camping and enjoying the great outdoors, the wax fire starters are very easy to use. All you need to do is set up a tepee or log cabin of kindling, place the fire starter in the center and light it. It should flare up and burn for about 5 minutes, long enough to catch the kindling and get your fire going.

One of the best features of wax fire starters are the fact that they can be used in practically any type of weather. They are water resistant and keep down the amount of supplies that you need in your camping inventory.

Before you use a fire starter, it is important to stress that fire starters should never be used as a candle. They burn very quickly and very hot and will cause serious injuries if you use them for anything except outdoor campfire starters.

How to Decorate Your Outdoor Living Space

After a long, hard winter cooped up indoors, you deserve to get outside and enjoy your outdoor space to the fullest. Most of us opt to enjoy our homes more in lieu of the expense and aggravation of traveling in these economic and uncertain times. With just a few simple steps, you can spend more time outdoors no matter what the reason or occasion.

Define a Space

Start by defining an area where you will spend time much like your indoor living space. Whether it's a paved patio, an area of your lawn, or a deck, envision how you want it to function and feel. Create this area by adding an element of privacy. This can be achieved by setting up a canopy, awning or gazebo or by using fabric panels or large plants to define the space. The idea is to create a room where you can relax and enjoy the outdoors but still feel a sense of privacy and seclusion when desired.

Furnish your Outdoor Room

Now that you have defined an area for outdoor living, you need to furnish it. You will want to think comfort here. Choose furniture that you would feel comfortable lounging in for hours. Be practical and think durability as well as easy maintenance. There are many outdoor furniture to choose from at varying price points. If your area is covered from the elements, then furniture with cushions would be great. If not, you might think about wicker or wrought iron where you can remove the cushions in the event of rain. Don't forget surface areas for your food and drinks. Consider side tables and a center table. Think dual purpose like a table that doubles as a fire pit on chilly nights or beverage holder/chiller conveniently at hand. The possibilities are endless.

Create Ambiance

This is my favorite part. Creating a room that lifts your spirits, relaxes you and provides all the comforts of being indoors. You need to decorate now by adding all the elements that will make your room inviting and warm. Outdoor lighting is the next thing to consider. If you have a gazebo or overhead canopy, try hanging a candle chandelier or lantern for overhead lighting. Place candle wall sconces on surrounding walls or surfaces. You can use regular candles or LED flameless candles here. It's eco-friendly and does not require any electrical hookup. Place candleholders around your living space to add warm candle glow at night. Also think solar lights for spaces that are uncovered. Up lights and path lights are great to highlight walkways, plants and trees. Make use of the free energy of the sun while being environmentally friendly. Surrounding yourself in warm, soothing light will set the scene for the entire evening.

Tuscan Home Decorating - The Materials and Textures

In my last two articles, I talked about the beauty, popularity and versatility of Tuscan home decorating and outlined the basic elements and use of colors in achieving this look. Now we're going to explore the use of materials and textures to create a Tuscan home of your own.

The warm, rustic look and feel that is reminiscent of the Tuscan region of Italy can be achieved by utilizing an eclectic and diverse of mix materials and textures. Since Tuscan decor is inspired by the natural surroundings of the region, keep this in mind as you select furniture, fabrics, accessories and even wall textures.

Following are some ideas and suggestions for utilizing a variety of organic materials to create a Tuscan-inspired home decor scheme of your own:

Iron Iron is used liberally in Tuscan decor. Wrought iron, copper and other metals are used in unique wall decor, candle holders, pot racks, canisters, baskets, urns, vases and furniture. Metal nail heads on furniture, both upholstered and wood, add Old World detail and richness.

Wood, being one of nature's most abundant resources, is a natural choice for Tuscan decorating. Tuscan wood furniture can be rough hewn and heavily distressed or more traditional and polished and can be used together throughout your home.

Think of a rustic farmhouse table for the kitchen or dining room. Or chairs and sofas with exposed wood arms and legs. Armoires, sideboards, hutches, bookcases and media centers made of warm and rich dark woods are both functional and beautiful. Iron is a perfect complement and accent to wood furniture.

Stone - in all of nature's colors - is a beautiful and durable material to use in tiles for counter tops, flooring and accessories. Tumbled, matte or polished travertine, marble and granite are popular choices.

A good, local faux painter can even create areas that appear to be made of stone. This technique works well in entryways, leading up a staircase, in wine cellars and kitchens.

Ceramic accessories add functionality, color and interest in any room or garden. Vases, pitchers, urns, tubs, planters, bowls, platters and dinnerware are common uses of ceramics in Tuscan decorating.

Finishes are both smooth and polished or rough and rustic. The glazes and paints used to finish Tuscan ceramics embrace the entire spectrum of the Tuscan color palette and are often irregular - which only adds to the uniqueness and beauty of an individual piece.

Fabrics Rich fabrics will soften the liberal use of hard surfaces and materials found in Tuscan decorating. Furniture upholstery, throw pillows and blankets, draperies, table cloths and runners, even tapestries in the rich or muted colors found in the Tuscan color palette create warmth and comfort.

Leather is also a versatile textile to use in Tuscan furniture and wall decor and works extremely well with wood, metal and other fabrics.

Foliage Don't forget to incorporate foliage in your Tuscan decor. Foliage can be live or silk plants, trees and flowers. Create groupings of foliage, ceramic and metal accessories for a natural, warm and inviting look.

There are no hard and fast rules or boundaries in Tuscan decorating. It can be inspired by a country farmhouse or a grand villa; both within the same space. Most important in Tuscan home decorating - don't be intimidated by it. Tuscan decorating is about the colors, textures and accessories in your home being harmonious and not "matchy-matchy."

Whether you're decorating an entire home in Tuscan style or are just looking for a few ideas or decor accessories to enhance what you already have, you can't go wrong with the Tuscan style. Tuscan home decor is casually elegant and perfect for everyday life in any home.

Wrought Iron Wall Decor - Renewable Sustainable Resource

Wrought iron wall decor has been used for thousands of years and it will continue through generations ahead mainly for its beauty and longevity. This metal is a renewable and sustainable resource. It may be repeatedly recycled and has benefits from reworking. Scrap from wrought iron can be gathered, reheated and forged again into a solid mass. This produces an iron of a higher quality. Wrought means any metal which is hammered, twisted or bent into a shape.

Decorating with wrought iron décor has become a trend . It adds the touch of being able to bring nature to ones surroundings. The beauty of placing wrought iron pieces is that it can fit well in any room of the house. It is available in various sizes small or large and comes in various shapes such as round, rectangular, square, oval and abstract designs that have intricate scrolls, swirls and leaves. It also blends well with most décor primarily because of its neutral color usually in brown or black. However you can alter wrought iron to compliment your room's decor by adding a coat of paint. You may also find pieces that are in distressed white and verdigris finishes which are unique and add a different dimension to your décor.

Wrought iron wall products reflect a fine blend of traditional designs and contemporary styles. It has brought a revolution to our homes in the form of home decor products. The list of wrought iron products is never ending. You just think of a product and you will find it made of wrought iron.

The prices of the wrought iron products are within reach of every pocket. The price is decided on three main factors. The complexity of the design, the type of welding carried out and the quality of the wrought iron used. The quality of the wrought iron depends on the amount of slag fibers present in the metal.

Walls can talk and they say a lot. Wall décor should be hung so that the center of the piece is at eye level for the average size person. Relate your wall décor size to the wall size. Choose smaller pieces for narrow walls and larger works for big wall spaces. A single large piece makes a statement. It brings focus and helps avoid a cluttered look. Tall wall plaques or groupings should be hung in a vertical line. This will add to the feeling of height in the room. Hanging long pieces in a horizontal line tends to give a calming effect and the illusion of width to a narrow room. You should look for pieces that inspire you and use their themes and colors as the foundation for other room elements.

Wrought iron wall hangings can take on a completely new look depending on where they are hung. They go well with many decorating themes and styles. Best of all they will never go out of style and they can become family heirlooms and be passed down from generation to generation.

Here are a few ideas on where some wrought iron pieces would look great in your home.

Metal art work is the most popular and a great idea for large bare walls since many pieces are on the larger scale and they make a great accessory for contemporary or casual designs. For inspirational pieces in bedrooms or small wall areas try wrought iron plaques and signs. The hallmark of wrought iron plaques is that they display an inspiring word or phrase in an artistic fashion. Wall scrolls combine the look of wrought iron in a beautiful painting. The wrought iron design around the edges of a painting gives a finished look. The best place to display the wall scroll is in the entryway of your home for a stunning first impression. For expansive walls with high ceilings or to fill spaces above and around wall tapestries and mirrors use wall candle holders or sconces. These will highlight the areas best and give your room the feel of sophistication and beauty. For something truly unique and unexpected mount a grouping of pressed wrought iron squares over the fire place and watch the reaction from others. The solution is to make your home uniquely yours with a wonderful assortment of wrought iron wall decor.

In my master bath I have found a wrought iron towel basket that I have mounted to the wall. It is hand crafted with a black powder coated finish. Every time I step out of the shower and grab a towel it gives me the feel of being in a luxurious hotel. For my guest bathroom I purchase a wrought iron wall shelf that I have placed essential items amongst the knick knacks. It brings the necessities out in the open for my guests while an elegance look and feel to the room. In my bedroom and guest rooms I have placed wall candle holders almost on every wall. It compliments the rooms with a dramatic touch and feel of romance. It embellishes the rooms comfort while creating a warm ambiance of grace and style. Scattered around my entire house are wrought iron decorative wall hooks. These provide a quick home accessory that adds function with style. I use these hooks to hang kitchen towels, pot holders, keys, bath robes, small kitchen and gardening tools and other small hangable objects.

Curtain, drapery and tapestry decorative wrought iron rods are the perfect finishing touch for your window treatments and art work. They usually require simple assembly but make a striking statement to what they adorn Make certain you place wall lighting effectively to enhance these features.

We are all in search of that perfect piece or entire room that screams out with our personality. With the vast variety of wrought iron available at your finger tips it can't get much easier to achieve. You to will have that regal, distinguished and sophisticated look you are after. Antique Fireplace Andirons Explained

Andirons are used to hold the logs inside the fireplace. American made andirons evolved a much different design direction since the 1600's, as wood fuel which was plentiful here was all but gone in much of England.

Sturdy forged iron designs have been made in the US since the early days of colonization, when the fireplace was used for both cooking and heating. Since great big pieces of wood burn for a longer time, a substantial design was required to hold these large logs in place. Forged iron is a process where a piece of metal is heated to make it malleable; the andiron is bent and hammered into shape, so variations within a pair of hand forged andirons are quite common. Where the shaft and leg of the andiron are made as individual pieces, hand rivets are seen on the earliest designs.

Brass andirons were made in America starting in the late 1600's for use in more formal rooms. Immediately following the American Revolution it was considered somewhat unpatriotic to import from England, though wealthy households did bring in many French designs. Between 1790 and 1810 there were many brass foundries established in the US manufacturing andirons in brass. European styles were often duplicated, but uniquely American designs evolved with patriotic symbols becoming popular. Paul Revere was a noted maker of household brass items including andirons. Common design elements include claw feet, ball feet and slipper feet; a tall shaft to keep the logs in place topped with balls, urns, flame tips and steeple tops.

Short shank andirons, generally less than 8" long, were a more recent design popularized in London. Although most Londoners were burning coal or peat, the formal design of andirons still appealed to them in the Victorian era and still do today.

Cast iron became a preferred material during the Industrial Revolution, and continues to be popular today. Cast iron is made from pouring hot metal into molds, enabling mass production Available in all styles imaginable, the Victorians had a field day with mass production of cast iron andirons, often using regional designs & patriotic styles to adorn andirons that are heavy duty enough to provide years - even centuries - of use with wood burning fireplaces. Again, Americana was popular so we often see designs incorporating soldiers, George Washington, eagles, ships, arrows, owls and more.

It's easy to incorporate a pair of antique andirons into your home decor, even if you prefer the modern convenience of a gas or electric fire. When using gas logs, it's often easy to slide the shaft of the andiron under the log grate. Similarly with electric fires, place a set of electric logs or an electric insert onto your andirons. Painting the inside of the fireplace with high temperature black paint will provide a better focus on your "fire" and an aged look to bring the eye forward to your andirons.

Candles are an important part of interior decor. They can be used as the focal point in a place and the rest of the theme of the decor is based on them and they can also be used as accessories to support the decor theme. A lot many types of candles and candle holders are available online and in the market. They have different shapes and styles and are made of different materials like glass, metal, wrought iron, pewter, even plastic. As they are small and wide, usually a group of tealights are used at a given time. These are also used as floating candles too. In addition to that they can also be used to heat scented oil to keep a place fragrant. Their burning time is from 3 to 5 hours. Different types of tealight holders are available off the shelf. These glass tealight holders can be used to brighten any occasion. As for decorating a tea table, glass tealight holders are the best choice. Wrought Iron - From Outside to Inside and From Old to New

If you want to create a truly unique and stunning look for your home or office, consider wrought iron decorative art. The old world look of wrought iron adds a statement that no other art form can achieve. While it is still available in antique shops, you no longer have to search these shops. You can use the internet to make your search simple and relatively effortless with many websites offering wonderful reproductions and even custom options.

When we think of wrought iron, we tend to envision the wonderful decorative wrought iron art accents from English gardens; be it iron gates, garden arches, or eighteen or nineteen hundreds garden furniture. But, artistic metal decorative items have been with us for many centuries and their special statement; as interior art decor, has been reborn.

Early iron work dates back to Egypt in the 8th century B.C. and central Europe by 600 B.C. Prior to the middle ages, metal was used primarily for weapons. In the middle ages, iron use spread from nails, pipe, horseshoes, to door stops. From the sixteen hundreds on, iron work became sophisticated and highly decorative. It was used for balconies in Spain, to gateways in France and London, and ultimately to the fabulous streets in New Orleans. Even the Eiffel Tower is a form of wrought iron.

Today, metal art pieces are readily available and at a variety of price points. Most pieces are actually mill steel; however, retain the name as they are wrought or worked by hand.

Choosing your wall decor can be intimidating. Is the space you are working with large or small? How will the wall decor fit with your other furnishings? What color or shape should I choose? How To Choose The Ideal Office Decoration To Brighten Up Your Space

If you find your office space dull and uninspiring, its time you found the right office decoration or decorations to improve it. Understand, this doesn't mean you need to perform a complete makeover on your office; it's simply a matter of improving what you already have by adding color, knickknacks, wall hangings, lighting and/or other décor to add a little spice to your working environment. In fact, in many cases, all one usually needs to add is a single element to brighten up their work space.

Let's assume for a moment that you can only add one office decoration to your space. What would you choose? The following are some ideas for you to consider:

Color - If you have walls, what color are they? Did you know that color can have a dramatic affect on your mood? The best office wall colors are light warm shades of yellow, neutral tones such as taupe, or light shades of cool colors such as green or blue. Warm colors provide you with energy; neutral colors keep you in a state of balance; and cool colors help to relax you. Painting your walls may be all the office decoration you need to help improve the look and feel of your space.

Wall Decorations - If your office is a cubicle that cannot be painted, your walls are already a color you enjoy, or you are not permitted to change them, your next best option for improving your walls is to add a picture or another form of wall art. If you enjoy pictures, consider making a collage of family photos, or of a special vacation, or of good times spent with friends - anything that makes you happy. If wall art is the appealing office decoration, choose a painting, poster or photograph of scenery, architecture, animal, etc. that really appeals to you; something that will put a smile on your face, and provide you with an instant escape as soon as you lay eyes on it.

Ornaments - Trinkets or knickknacks (I.E. good luck charms, family photos, etc.) for your desk or other shelves in your office may provide you with that little jolt of inspiration you need when you reach the difficult point of the day.

Organization - Believe it or not, but a filing cabinet, shelves, pen holder, and other organization furniture may just be the décor you need. Too much clutter in your office can cause you to feel excessive stress. Therefore, while you may think a new picture is what you need to rejuvenate your space, in actuality, all you may require is a little organization so you can appreciate the decorations you already have.

Lighting - If you find you have enough decorations and color in your office, but something still seems to be amiss, your problem is likely related to lighting. If you don't have a window in your office, make sure you have sufficient overhead lighting. It is also a good idea to obtain a desk or floor lamp with a flexible neck so you can not only move the light to where you need it most, but also so you can use full spectrum light bulbs (light bulbs that mimic sunlight) and shine the light on yourself to rejuvenate your body.

Finally, other office decorations you can consider include plants, window treatments, area carpet, chair, etc. Just remember, when decorating your office, you need to ensure you don't clutter up your space. The idea is to be comfortable, not overwhelmed. Therefore, carefully consider one office decoration at a time to ensure you create the best working environment designed to fit your personal and professional needs.

Wrought Iron Lanterns Work Well Indoors and Outdoors

Wrought iron lanterns can add a unique look to both your interior and exterior décor. Inside, they can be placed on tables and used as lamps or suspended from the ceiling or attached to walls to serve as room lighting. Outside they can be used for porch, patio, or deck lighting. Again, they can be suspended from a ceiling or attached to exterior walls.

Because wrought iron is iron that has been heated to a very high temperature so that it becomes soft (or malleable), it can be pounded into many different shapes and designs. For this reason, you have a wide variety of styles of wrought iron lanterns to choose from.

You may even have the advantage of choosing your own design, especially if you live in an area where an ornamental ironworks business is located. You can draw a picture of the design you have in mind and take it to the shop. There, you can discuss the design with the employee who handles such things, and find out how much it would cost, how long it would take, and other information.

Wrought iron lanterns that can be used outside come with wall brackets that can be anywhere from 7" to 12" long. The lanterns that either hang from them or fit flush against them are sized to fit the specific size bracket, so your lantern fixture itself can range from a smaller one to one that is big enough to fit on the larger bracket. Of course, the size of the lantern as well as the design and the light openings will determine how much light the fixture casts.

Speaking of light, most wrought iron lanterns for outside use operate electrically. Inside, however, it is possible to have some that are designed for candle burning or for electrical use. For example, you may be able to find one that even though it is technically considered a wall sconce, it holds a lantern globe. This would be a very unique decorating feature for a living room, hallway, or anywhere you choose to place it.

Wrought Iron Candle Holders - That Extra Special Addition to Your Home

Candles are a lovely way to create a relaxing and ambient atmosphere in any room of your home. Placing candles on wrought iron candle holders add to this romantic feel and there are plenty of designs to choose from.

Wrought iron holders come in many different forms such as free standing, wall mounted, chandelier and table top holders. They can be any size - from huge free standing ones placed in a large room to small, inconspicuous holders on fireplace mantelpieces. They can be wall mounted, with one, two or three holders and even extravagant chandeliers to hang above your dining room table for those ever so important dinner parties.

Free standing holders can be placed in dark corners where normal light does not always reach; giving your larger rooms that extra light in which to relax. These can be simple stands, or they can be fussy works of art, anything that takes your fancy.

Wall mounted holders can be placed in smaller rooms such as bathrooms, small living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms to add to the atmosphere. Sometimes normal lighting is just too harsh to create a soothing environment. Once again, these come in all styles and finishes to suite every taste.

If you are into something more lavish then wrought iron candle chandeliers will surely make a statement. From small to large, these fixtures complement any room in the house with many different and versatile designs to choose from. They can be single candle holders with a simple design, or they can be multi-unit candle holders that scream for attention.

One of the striking aspects of wrought iron candle holders, apart from the choice that is available, is the fact that because the metal is relatively cheap and easy to work with you need not break the bank to afford what you are looking for. Wrought iron candles holders are easily one of the best ways to achieve a look you are after for relatively little money.

Kitchen Remodel - 6 Ways to Achieve Tuscan Kitchen Design

Tuscany is well know for its beautiful landscapes, delicious wines and fabulous fresh foods. Many who have traveled to Italy yearn to have a Tuscan style kitchen in which they too can prepare delicious gourmet meals in a charming old world setting. Even those that have not traveled to Italy yearn for a kitchen that possesses all the magnetic charisma that a Tuscan style kitchen beholds. There's something sweet and grandmotherly yet boldly noble about Tuscan kitchen design that makes it one of the most popular design styles for kitchens today.

If you are planning a kitchen remodel or designing a kitchen from scratch, incorporate the following items and you will have the Tuscan kitchen of your dreams.

#1 - Granite or Marble Countertops

Old World Tuscan style kitchens often have natural stone kitchen countertops. Marble countertops are ideal for kneading dough for fresh baked bread. Granite countertops are the most durable of all and will last forever if cared for properly. Granite is ideal for chopping fresh vegetables and no cutting board is required. Granite is the strongest of stones, second only to the diamond. It doesn't matter what color of stone you choose because natural stone colors blend well with the Tuscan color palate.

#2 - Tuscan Colors

The Tuscan color palate is one that is reflective of the natural surrounding outdoors. Rich shades of ochre and sunflower gold, poppy red, burnt sienna and aged copper, almond and walnut brown and shades of green from olive to rich cedar are all very popular. Rich colors infuse a Tuscan style kitchen. You will rarely find a Tuscan style kitchen that is a clear white or dove gray. Colors are rustic, deep, bold and earthy.

#3 - Kitchen Island

In Old World Tuscan kitchens the center table was a place to not only dine but to also prepare food. Peeling and chopping was often done at the table, then the table would be cleared for eating after the meal was prepared. Now we desire kitchen islands that make meal preparation even easier and normally offers bar stools or counter seats for those that want to eat there in the kitchen center.

#4 - Iron Accessories

Old World Tuscan style kitchens are known for their substantial iron chandeliers, candelabras and candlesticks. To achieve a modern-day version of this look, there are many iron light fixtures, candle holders, wall sconces and simple iron wall decorations that when added create the look of Tuscan kitchen design.

#5 - Natural Stone Backsplash

Old World Tuscan kitchens often incorporated real stone into the walls. The homes were often made of stone and so many times the inside of the home went unfinished and the stone was beautifully exposed. Especially around the hearth there would be natural stone due to its' natural fireproof properties. Today a natural stone backsplash in the kitchen gives that old world Tuscan appearance. Behind the cooktop, natural stone is especially effective in use and appearance.

#6 - Natural Stone Flooring

Old World Tuscan kitchens normally had floors made of natural stone. The stone is durable and easier to keep clean than other materials. Today natural stone floors are more popular than ever since they will last forever and don't harbor dust, bacteria and odors like carpet and wood. Natural stone tiles such as travertine, slate, granite and marble are easy to install and maintain.

8 Ideas for Decorating a Victorian Bedroom

For many a Victorian style bedroom has an antique but typically feminine feel to. The Victorian era started in the 1830's and was around until 1900 (when Queen Victoria died) and there are many variations to be had relating to the style of a Victorian bedroom but hopefully the points provided below will help you when decorating a Victorian bedroom for yourself.

1. Bed

A Victorian bed should be showy wooden affair or made from either cast-iron, brass or a combination of both these metals. You may be able to get a skilled carpenter to produce or adapt a full bed to queen size or merging twin beds together to produce a king size. But if you really do not have the money to spend on such a luxury there are many modern reproduction beds available at a fraction of the cost.

2. Dressing the Bed

The bed should be elaborately dressed with canopies and drapes, lots of pillows, flounces, ribbons and other trims. If you can search out your local fabric store and see if they have period type quilts etc., available.

3. Tables

It is important that you include either a marble topped table or cabinet in your room design as well as a wicker, bamboo or faux bamboo table, round or skirted table as a nightstand. Why not visit your local junk or antique shop to see what turned and carved wooden tables they may have for inclusion in your design from that era.

4. Lighting

It is vital that you get the lighting right in decorating a Victorian bedroom and this should include the classic ginger-jar style, or those that are made from porcelain, crystal or brass. You may even decide to use candlestick holders which have been transformed to be used as a light. Under each lamp you should place a crocheted doily for obtaining the authentic period look.

5. Dressers & Chest of Drawers

These should be typically made from either dark stained oak, mahogany or walnut and be embellished with carvings, pediments and have either ornate brass or carved wooden drawer pulls. You may be lucky to find ones that also have a candle stand, tilting mirror and marble top to them.

6. Flooring

To provide that authentic Victorian look to your bedroom use Oriental area rugs or straw type mats. You may if you wish us hooked or machine loomed rugs that have a floral or a swirly abstract pattern on them.

7. Accessories

Such accessories you should include in your room are period pictures (include subjects such as botanicals, children, maidens (young women) and animals in these pictures). Also include an elaborate golden or stained wood framed mirror in to your design. If you can also place fresh flowers in period style vases in the room and visit your local junk or antique shop to find some Victorian style collectibles for inclusion in your design such as china dishes and figurines.

8. Windows

These should be dressed with full curtains or drapes which have ruffles, valances, braid, lace, bows and tassels on them (but you don't need to have every just one or two will suffice). The materials your should be using to dress your windows should be either velvet, brocade, delicate florals and then layered with lace sheers.

So decorating a Victorian bedroom can be quite easy all you need to do is just carry out a little research and hopefully you will be able to design and decorate the bedroom of your dreams.

Double Curtain Rods

Double curtain rods are similar to normal curtain rods -- the difference being that they have double rods that enable layered or decorative curtains to be hung easily. Double curtain rods have scrolls on each end to hold two adjustable rods, so that it is easy to create a pretty, decorative window display. Another nice feature to double curtain rods is that they are designed in such a way that they have no problem fitting any place, just like any other curtain rods.

Double curtain rods make it possible to give windows and curtains a rich look, as they allow double curtains hanging that have a dimensional effect. This normally means the inner layer is a soothing light color of thin fabric, followed by the thick curtain fabric that normally matches the inner curtain. This not only gives a rich and elegant look, but also allows the outer curtain to be pulled back, leaving the thinner layer exposed for a completely different look and allowing the sun to filter through the room.

Double curtain rods are available in two different sizes from small, medium and large. They are very popular and easy to install, as they normally come complete with the necessary hardware that gives you a variety of installation options to suit your taste. Since they are made of iron, they are easy to handle and easily adjustable. The iron makes them strong enough to handle even heavy curtains. When installed on site you can adjust or even cut the rods to fit the length of your window.

Curtain Rods provides detailed information on Curtain Rods, Shower Curtain Rods, Decorative Curtain Rods, Magnetic Curtain Rods and more. Curtain Rods is affiliated with Kitchen Curtains.

Tricks for Decorating Your Fireplace for Halloween Treats

Halloween is more than kids and candy. It has, in the past few years, become one of the major events for which Americans decorate their homes! So here are four quick, easy, and simple Halloween decorating ideas featuring your fireplace hearth:

o Convert a cluster of small, three to six inch pumpkins into candle holders for your fireplace mantle or hearth. With a knife, cut off each pumpkin's stem. Then, with an apple corer, remove a cylindrical core from the pumpkins. Stick a candle into each pumpkin. Use black and orange candles in your mini-pumpkin candle holders for a Halloween look or candles in yellows, burnt orange and mellow browns for an autumnal display.

o If you are using your fireplace for gas, wood, or gel fires, Halloween appropriate andirons are both fun and functional. Black cat andirons not only hold your logs but also hold the attention of those by your fire! Each andiron features a cast iron black cat with glass eyes. With a fire going in your fireplace, the flicker of the fire through those black cat andiron's glass eyes gives a spooky but charming effect!

o If you are not using your fireplace for fires, it is a great place for your jack-o-lantern. Since your fireplace is designed for fire, it is a super safe place for a jack-o-lantern with one or more candles inside it. Either set the jack-o-lantern on your fireplace grate or on the floor of the fireplace. Your fireplace is the visual focal point of a room, so featuring one or more lit jack-o-lanterns there can be either the total extent of your Halloween decorating or a striking main decoration.

o If your fireplace is currently just an empty black hole, fireplace candelabra can keep it from suffering from the Black Hole Syndrome. For Halloween add orange and black candles, or candles in the shape of little pumpkins or jack-o-lanterns, or even candles shaped like candy corn! After Halloween, just change the candles and get a new look. Whenever you want the welcoming glow of firelight in your hearth without the hassle of logs, just light the candles in your fireplace candelabra. Fireplace candelabra are available not only in traditional black cast iron, but also in copper and silver tones. Some fireplace candelabra are designed to hold votive candles or tea lights if you prefer those.

Use one or more of these decorating Tricks to light up your fireplace for Halloween, and you will be delighted by the visual Treat in your hearth.

How to Install an Iron Wall Candle Holder

Iron wall candle holders have been around for thousands of years. They date back to medieval times where these wall candle holders were used for lighting the hallways of castles. Today these charming pieces of decorative art are used to add a feeling of warmth and tranquility to the room whose walls adorn them.

In order to install these types of candles, you must first know the circumstances of the room in which these will hang. Since this form of indoor wall lighting will use candles for lighting, you must examine the room to make sure that these wall candles will not be placed on the walls near anything that could possibly catch fire while the candles are burning, such as surrounding art, curtains, coat racks and anything else that could catch fire.

Keep in mind that candles melt and melted wax can get on your walls and floors. To avoid this you may want to have some sort of glass cover around your candle. Glass covers are available in clear frosted or colors of your choice.

Another good idea is to determine how high on the walls you wish to place these holders. If children are a part of your household, you may want to place these holders above the reach of children.

After you know whether you want or don't want a glass covering your candle and exactly how high you want your holders on your walls, the next thing is to measure each wall for placement. Depending on how many you wish to place on each wall, with a tape measure, measure how high on the wall you want to place them. I suggest that you measure from the floor up the wall and mark the wall at the proper height using a pencil. Go about 12 inches over from your first wall mark and repeat this procedure. Now you have 2 pencil marks on the wall at the same height about 12 inches apart.

Next, measure the width of the wall at the same height you placed the 2 previous height pencil marks and write the width measurement on a piece of paper. Depending on how many of these holders you wish to hang, divide the width of the wall by the number of wall candles you wish to hang. Once you know how far apart each holder will be, then using a tape measure, mark the wall with a pencil dot on each place the holder will hang.

If you are placing iron wall candle holders along the sides of wall art or a wall mirror, then what you need to do is measure how far from the left and right side of the artwork you wish to place each holder. With your measuring tape go to the left and right side of the wall art (or wall mirror) and measure from the edge of the art outward on both sides. Make sure your outward measurements on both sides are identical. Repeat this step over again on both sides, only this time go about 8 inches either above or below your first marks on both sides of your wall art (or wall mirror).

Now using the 2 pencil dots you have on both sides of your wall art, line your tape measure from the floor up the wall using the 2 pencil dots as a guide for a straight line and mark a pencil dot on the wall exactly how high you wish to hang your candle holder. Repeat this procedure on the other side of the wall art and you will have identical spacing for your holders on both sides of the wall art (or wall mirror).

Iron wall candle holders are not light in weight. In order to hang these holders securely you must use what is known as a wall anchor. Remember, never try to hang an iron wall candle holder with a screw directly into drywall or plastered walls. It just won't hold the weight.

Wall anchors are small devices that are placed into the wall at the exact same place a screw would go to hold up these types of wall candles. By using a wall anchor you will be able to hold heavy objects such as heavy metal sconces securely to the wall without having to worry about the fixture becoming loose from the wall and eventually falling off the wall.

Wall anchors come in different styles and sizes to accommodate different size screws that will screw into it after the anchor has been placed into the wall. My favorite wall anchor for hanging wall mounted candle holders looks like a short stubby plastic screw with a screw hole in the center.

This anchor is easy to install. All you have to do is drill a small hole (about half the diameter of the anchor) where you want to place the screw to hold your candle on the wall. After you have drilled the small hole, all you have to do is screw in the anchor into the small hole you just drilled until it is flush to the wall. Repeat this procedure for all the screws needed to mount your iron wall candle holder. When you have inserted all the anchors needed to mount your wall sconce to the wall, then you simply hold the wall sconce in position over the anchors and proceed to screw your holder up to the wall. It is as simple as that and rest assured that your candle sconce is on the wall securely.

Iron wall candle holders are works of art that come in many different shapes and sizes. They add comfort to the overall feeling of any room in which they are placed on the wall. With a small amount of effort you can add these to several rooms of your home and enjoy a simple but pleasing touch of art passed on down through the centuries.

Playful Playrooms

A playroom can be one of the most fun rooms in the house to decorate. Where else can whimsy rule besides in the one room that is set aside for nothing but fun? Bright colors and varied textures will help make the room pop, and make it interesting to even the youngest child.

Because this is a room where small children will spend a lot of time, it's important to keep safety in mind as well. Even if the rest of your home has hardwood floors, this is one room where a thick, soft carpet is a must. Upgrade to the best pad that your budget will allow. That way, if your little one takes a spill while playing, she'll have something soft to break the fall.

Because the room will be full of toys and stuffed animals, you will be able to keep decorative items to a minimum. All this room needs is a nice carpet, furniture and wall treatments.

It was mentioned earlier that a thick soft carpet is a must in a playroom. Furniture should also be child friendly, and should not have any sharp corners on which a child could hit his head. Keeping furniture to a minimum will maximize the amount of play space available. While some families have play rooms that do double duty as an office or TV room, others have dedicated play rooms.

If your room is set aside just for play, then consider adding only one comfortable sofa and no other furniture. This will give you a place to sit and watch the kids play without cluttering up the room. It may seem inconvenient not to have a coffee table on which to set a drink. If so, purchase folding trays and set one up only when needed. Having so little furniture will not only allow the room to have an open, airy feel, but it will also make the room safer for the children and easier to clean (less dusting!) for you.

You are limited only by your own creativity when it comes to wall treatments for a playroom. Some parents have painted the walls with brightly colored circles, other have hired a muralist to paint a scene fit for a princess or a future baseball star. Another fun idea is to do something completely different on each of the walls.

For example, cover one wall with chalkboard paint and give your little artist plenty of room to draw. Cover another wall in mirrors of varying sizes and with different frames. This will add light to the room, and help the room to look larger while the various frames will enhance the playful look of the room.

Finally, add a great big clock - perhaps in the center of the mirror wall - and be sure it is does not have a digital display. This will help your child get used to telling time "the old fashioned way", and may be one of the few places that she sees a non-digital clock throughout the day.

Have fun decorating the playroom in your home. After all, isn't fun the whole point?

How to Burn Pillar Candles And Fat Round Candles

Remove all packaging material before burning pillar or grubby candles.
Only burn in a holder designed for the candles.
Never place any candle directly on furniture.
Burn your freestanding candles 1 hour for each inch in diameter and keep the wick centered. This allows the flame time to melt the wax to the outer edge.
Not allowing your candle to burn until the wax melts to its outer edge will cause the candle to core down the middle & shorten burn time.
Do not trim the wick too short or it will not generate enough heat to melt the wax sufficiently.
Keep your candle wax free of matches, wick trimmings & flammable materials
To extinguish a candle with little or no smoking: use a candle snuffer.
Dip the wick into the melt pool and then retrieve it. Wick will be primed and ready for next lighting. The wax on the wick will light quicker than a dry wick.
Do not burn in drafty areas.
Your candles will have a more even burn if you give them a little (about ¼ turn) about every hour or so.
Crooked burning does happen if the wick becomes off center. To rectify the crooked burning, you can use a butter knife to gently push it back to center. If there is a draft from a fan or an open window, rotating the candle can help the candle to burn more evenly.
Remove candle wax from the candle holders by running very hot water over them.
The second way to remove wax from a candle holder is place the candle holder inside the freezer for about 10-15 minutes, take it out and hit the bottom of the holder with the flat of your hand. Usually the old wick and what left over candle wax pops out. I have had to use a butter knife to push down on the edge of the left over wax to help it come out.
To remove wax from washable fabrics, scrape off excess wax and run boiling water through the material.
To remove wax from carpeting, use a paper bag from the grocery store, get your iron very hot, iron the top of the grocery bag and most of the wax will come out.
If your candle is lit and in another room, it might be a good idea to check on it every hour.
A small amount of wax left at the bottom of containers/votives, and sometimes an outer shell of wax left on pillars is normal. The remaining wax at the bottom of a candle is a result of wick tabs with long necks that are specifically manufactured to keep a fire from starting if a candle is burned too low.

The History of Candles

A brief history lesson of candles based on The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition:

"candle cylinder of wax or tallow containing a wick, used for illumination or for ceremonial purposes.

The evidence of ancient writings is not conclusive as to the history of the candle; translated-"candle" may have meant "torch" or "lamp," and the "candlestick" was probably a stand for one of these candles. The candle probably evolved from wood, rushes, or cords dipped in fat or pitch. Candles as well as lamps were used in Roman times; by the Middle Ages candles (tallow for the poor and wax for the wealthier) were quite common in Europe. Tallow, beeswax, and vegetable wax such as bayberry in the American colonies, candleberry in the East, and waxberry in South America were supplemented by spermaceti in the late 18th cent., by stearine c.1825, and by paraffin c.1850. Twisted strands for wicks were replaced (c.1825) by the plaited wick. Candles were commonly made by repeated dipping in melted tallow, by pouring tallow or wax into molds, or by pouring beeswax over the wicks. Most modern candles are machine-made by a molding process. In literature, art, and religion the candle has had a wide range of symbolism; it commonly represents joy, reverence for the divine, and sacrifice (since the candle spends itself)."

As we all Know the candle has been in our lives for centuries and continues be a big part of our lives today in modern times. Birthday Candle ring a bell? How about setting a mood for that certain someone coming over, or just plain setting a mood to relax in and escape the hectic world outside? Also another use of a candle is for weddings and wedding decoration, let's not forget the Unity Candle in some cases.

No matter what the case it is evident that candles are here to stay, and there are so many varieties today to choose from. So many candles can be found online. Do a search on Google and you will see for yourself. I would like to point out the fact with using candles, there is a certain amount of safety you must pay attention to. Make sure you are placing a candle on a smooth, stable surface away form anything flammable. Another good idea is to use a safe holder to place the candle on or inside of. You can also find many varieties of candle holders, candelabras, chandeliers, and lanterns online also.

Candles and holders make great decorations and gift ideas also.

Holiday Candles - Questions and Answers - Part 2

We will address more of the Holiday Candles - Questions and Answers - on how to safely remove candle wax from our carpeting, chemical reactions while burning our candles, types of wicks and other general questions.

How do I remove wax from carpeting or fabric?

When the candle wax has hardened, gently remove the larger pieces of candle wax. After you have removed the larger pieces of wax, get a clean paper towel and place it over the wax spill. Warm the paper towel by using an iron on the lowest setting or a blow dryer on its lowest heat setting. The wax under the towel will begin to melt and soak up into the towel. Blot the wax and repeat as necessary until the wax is removed.

Another way is to use brown paper bags from the grocery store. Open up the bag, lay it across the wax, turn the iron setting to high, iron across the brown paper bag and the brown paper bag will absorb the wax. This tip is for a large area of wax on your carpeting. You will need many brown paper bags opened in order to help absorb the candle wax from a large candle wax spill.

It is highly recommend that you consult your fabric or carpet manufacturer's instructions before trying either of these methods. Should the wax still be present after using either one or both of these methods, please consult your home owners insurance to see if your carpet can be replaced.

Personally, I consulted my carpeting manufacturer's instructions, called a carpeting house, checked our home owners' insurance policy and used the internet to see what other options I had when my huge 3 wick Holiday Candle blew out its side and red wax melted onto a large area of my carpeting. After removing 95% of the wax, the wax residue and the red coloring made a huge mess on 5 feet of my carpeting. Our home owners insurance did pay to replace my carpeting.

How do I remove wax from wood surfaces? You can place a bag of ice over the hot candle wax so the candle wax can harden, then use a dull object to help remove the larger pieces of wax. Be sure to use a dull object on your wood furniture when removing the larger chips of wax so you won't ruin your wood finish. Should any wax spots be left on your furniture, place several sheets of paper towel over the wax spill, set your iron to a warm setting and iron over the paper toweling and try not to iron your wood furniture.

After you have done all of the above suggestions and there still is a residue of wax left, take mayonnaise, smear it over the surface with the wax residue and just wipe away the wax from the surface. This will also clean your wood surface.

How do I get all of the wax out of my candle holder? Allow your candle holder to cool, place it in the freezer for approximately 10-15 minutes to allow the wax to harden, take it out of the freezer and hit it against the palm of your hand. The wax should pop out into your hand. If this does not work, use hot water to dissolve the wax. Be sure to dry your holder before using it for another candle.

You can also remove the wax from your container by using a hair dryer. When all the wax is melted, wipe away the melted wax with a clean cloth. Be careful. The container can get very hot when you hold the blow dryer close to your container for a a few minutes, especially if it is metal.

Do candles contain lead? There is no lead in the candle wax and no member of the National Candle Association (NCA), which accounts for 90% of all candles made in the USA, uses lead wicks. NCA members voluntarily agreed more than 25 years ago not to use lead wicks. Although some candles, primarily imports, reportedly contain lead wicks, the majority of wicks manufactured in the USA are made of 100% cotton or cotton-paper combinations. Some USA made candles do contain metal wicks. These are typically zinc or tin wicks which are known to be safe and non-toxic.

What sort of chemical reaction is created by burning a candle? When your candle burns, the flame consumes the wax to produce water vapor and carbon dioxide, the same harmless byproducts humans produce when exhaling. This is true for all types of candle waxes.
Are certain candle waxes better than others? No. All types of quality candle waxes perform well, burn cleanly and safely when formulated and used properly. Candle manufacturers select waxes or blends of waxes based on their characteristics and their suitability for specific types of candles.

Tips For a Beautiful Patio

Your patio can either be a wasted space or an important portion of your living space. More and more, people are looking at patio space as extra square footage rather than just a place to put the grill and leave muddy shoes.

Patios are great for entertaining, and offer choices that aren't available indoors. Here are some ideas for using your patio, and turning it from blah to a place that you and your family will love spending time together.

Fire pit or Fireplace

Outdoor fireplaces are growing in popularity, and are becoming much more common in backyards across America. A fireplace adds elegance and ambience to your outdoor parties or dinners. While beautiful, some people prefer a fire pit over a fireplace. The reason is that the fire pit allows several people to sit around the fire, roasting marshmallows or just shooting the breeze.

Whether you choose a fireplace or a fire pit, a fire feature will help make your patio space very special. If you can't decide between the two, just get them both!

Outdoor Kitchen Area

In addition to your grill, consider adding an outdoor refrigerator and sink. This will help all your outdoor dinners and parties run like clockwork, and you won't have to be inside - away from your guests - while you prepare the food. Once a luxury, the cost of outdoor appliances has dropped and more and more families are able to have their own outdoor kitchen.

Seating

To really be able to use your patio to its fullest, you should have seating both around a dining table and other seating areas where people can visit or just enjoy your backyard. Even if your patio is on the small side, there may still be a way to fit extra seating. Consider seating that goes around the edges of your patio. This will provide maximum seating while taking up a minimal amount of patio space. You'll want your seating to be comfortable so purchase thick, cushions with covers that can be easily removed for washing.

Make it Pretty and Final Touches

When considering the final touches to your outdoor space, attack it much as you would indoor space. Think about what you want to achieve with your outdoor space. Do you want it to be relaxing and inviting or whimsical and fun? Do you want it to remind you and your guests of a trip to the shore or a night in the city? Whatever you choose, be sure than any products you buy will be able to stand up to the weather. Spray metal items with a rust inhibitor and protect any wood pieces with a water protectant.

If your climate will allow it, use flowers all around. After all, you want your outdoor space to LOOK like outdoor space. If space allows and you plan to install game areas, such as volleyball, whenever possible make the games visible to those sitting on your patio. This will allow family and guests to take advantage of the seating on the patio while still being able to enjoy watching the games.

Your patio can be a wonderful addition to your home. With a little creativity you can turn it into one of the most popular spaces in your home!

Use Wall Crosses to Design a Focal Point

You can easily make a strong statement about your style, personality and faith by hanging a decorative cross. You can find these accents in various styles and sizes and fit them in any room in your house. A wall cross is not limited to a living room or den; you can also use this accessory in a bedroom, dining room, or any other space.

A Foyer Focal Point

The foyer or entryway is the perfect spot for a wall cross because visitors notice it as soon as they come in, and you get to see it every time you leave and come home. One way to create a cohesive theme is to group pieces with a similar element. Arrange a pair of candle scones along with your crosses; try to use crosses and scones of similar material. A interesting way to display your collection of wall crosses is to display them on a shelf with a flower arrangement, pieces of pottery, or figurines. You can purchase accessories to go with any room from rustic to Old World to contemporary. If you want to go with a religious theme, then create a scene with figurines, such as the ark or a nativity scene. You can also place a text that has been framed of a prayer or a beautiful religious painting.

Creating a Hallway Centerpiece

Many people showcase photos and mementos in a hallway, but you can also add other artistic elements like a wall cross. By matching the make and color of the picture frames with the finish and style of the decorative cross, you can develop a completed look. Look for accessories such as prints, plaques and paintings at local retailers that cater to this specific niche.

Because a cross for the wall doesn't protrude, wall crosses are the perfect accessory for a narrow hallway. Create a wonderful display by grouping crosses horizontally in a line. Attempt to establish a theme. Although the crosses should not be identical, they should have something in common. For instance, implement only crosses for the wall that are made from wrought iron in a abundance of styles or paint crosses made of different materials the same color. If you are a frequent traveler, you might also think about pairing crosses that you purchase on your vacations together. A great way to remember your travels is to place photos that are in frames or souvenirs that you purchased while traveling.

A Versatile Accessory

Consider a wall cross when you need a focal point for any spot in your home whether it is in the bedroom, library, or in a hallway. When hanging your decorative cross, you can combine it with other accents or you can elect to use it on its own as a focal point. What accessories will work depends on what material the cross is made of and what style it is done in. So this means that a wall cross of a contemporary design will not look good with country accents.

Creating Your Own Designer Candles

One easy way to set the tone of a room is to add candles. Nowadays, candles also come in a variety of scents, which can increase the ambience of a room. Candles have become so popular that there are now even designer candles with embellishments such as shell and beads. Unfortunately, these candles are often very expensive compared to plain candles. If you want to get that expensive look of designer candles in your own home then you can decorate plain candles yourself for a fraction of the price.

Wrap it Up

o One of the easiest way to decorate a candle is to layer it with your favorite decorations. You can find faux gems and pearls already on a string in your local craft store. All it takes is a little glue to attach the strand of gems or pearls to the candle. Make sure you wrap the string tightly and do no leave any gaps. If the string is too big, but it down to size and secure it with a knot.

o You can do the same thing with ribbon, trims, sequin, yarn, and even fabric strips. You can find materials anywhere: the fabric store, craft store, or even your own home. Recycle a favorite dress, shirt, or kid's blanket into a covering for a candle. You can be inspired by anything around you, so take your inspiration from your favorite colors, textures or patterns.

Buttons
o Buttons are not just meant for clothing. Try wrapping a candle in ribbon and then pinning buttons on top. Alternatively, you can also just glue buttons to the candle. The effect created will depend on what materials you use. For example, sheer white ribbon with pearl buttons creates a perfect centerpiece for a wedding. You can create a nature themed look by using raffia or hemp and buttons that look like stone or wood. Gluing branches around the bottom of the candle adds to the natural theme.

o You can also attach buttons to create images, such as flowers. A larger button makes the center of the flower while smaller ones form petals and green pins make the leaves and stems. You can also make other basic images like rainbows or smiley faces. Try creating a whole scene with a sun, house, and flowers.
Garden Candle
o If you want to get a delicate look, try attaching dried flowers to a candle. While you can glue the flowers on, the best way to do it is to use melted wax. Candle wax can be purchased in any craft store. Once you melt it down, smear a little onto the back of a dried flower with a paintbrush. Then cover the flowers with another layer of wax in order to protect the delicate flowers. You can also tie a ribbon or hemp around the candle, but attaching buttons or beads would overdo it.

o If you are looking for fragrance, then add natural fragrant items, such as vanilla or coffee beans, cinnamon, or fragrant herbs by attaching them with wax. For your own safety do not light candles that have been decorated with flammable items.
